That's because most people are looking for someone else to sort out their problems for them, or come and rescue them. Because of the slavery experience, we learned to be helpless.

Or we think we need a solution for "us", for the Black community. But you cannot help others until you have learned how to achieve your goals.

Here is the key: change starts from within.

We need to learn from the experience of Harriet Tubman. When she first escaped from slavery with her brothers, she ended up returning to the plantation with them. Then she realized she needed to run away by herself first. Only when she liberated herself was she able to go back and liberate hundreds of others from slavery.

Once you have learned how to use these methods for yourself, you will know how we can all use them for our benefit - for ourselves, our families and our communities.

Why I Wrote Success Strategies for Black People

I think Black people have a tendency to be too reliant on other-power, and often do not have enough confidence in self-power.

This is my personal opinion. We tend to be too passive, and expect other people to sort out our problems.

How often have you heard someone say they are going to "leave it to god" as a way of abdicating their responsibility in a situation?

Those of us who are Christians and/or believe in a god tend to forget that the Bible says "God helps those who help themselves".

I am talking about a cultural tendency. Obviously, there are many in our community who are self-reliant. However, I think our tendency is often to rely on others or to look for a hero, a saviour or a leader - someone who will take charge. Someone else.

White people, on the other hand, tend to be fairly confident with self-power, but they often fear other-power. I see this tendency a lot here in Britain although it may be different in the States, where Christianity has a stronger pull on white as well as Black people.

When I wrote Success Strategies for Black People, I did not realize that this was one of the reasons why I was writing it. But this is probably the central message of the book. Rely on yourself. We have enormous power, but we generally do not use the power we have. Only when you rely on your own power will you be able to help others. We are so much stronger when we work together.

People of African heritage have enormous power and Success Strategies for Black People explores various ways in which we can use our power for our benefit, and for the benefit of our community.

We need both self-power and other power. We need to have a balance of both, and in Success Strategies for Black People, I talk about how we can use both.

The Need to Take Individual, Personal Responsibility

Some problems can ONLY be solved at the level of the individual.

Most of the time, pretty much all of the time, we have to take individual, personal responsibility for our own healing FIRST. Only then can we help others, help our families, help our communities. We cannot begin to help others until we address our own problems, our own patterns of thoughts and emotions. Many of these patterns of thoughts and emotions are unconscious, but we can begin to address them.

Another Reason Why I Wrote Success Strategies for Black People

Another reason why I wrote Success Strategies for Black People is that we tend to be very bound up in the past. Because of the brutality we have experienced, including extreme violence as well as more subtle forms of racism, we are often stuck in victim mentality. We don't focus on solutions, we tend to focus on the problems.

If you saw 12 Years a Slave, the suffering and struggle of Solomon Northrup will have reminded you of the brultality our ancestors suffered. This legacy has left us with deep and profound wounds. The anger and rage we sometimes experience is part of this legacy, and is a form of victim mentality.

It is not surprising that we experience victim mentality, having been brutalised so many times. However, we need to heal the wounds of the past, and we need to be solution-focused. The methods I wrote about in Success Strategies for Black People can help us to do this.

People of African heritage carry particular kinds of wounding.

In order to create the kind of future we deserve, we need to heal our past.

We have inhereited the negative, toxic patterns from our past - from the legacy of slavery.

Think about the attitudes we have learned towards people who are dark-skinned or light-skinned, towards our natural hair. We have internalised patterns of negativity and self-hatred, and made them a part of us.

We pass on these negative patterns unconsciously, from parent to child, from one generation to the next. We keep wounding ourselves and each other and this will continue until we make a conscious decision to heal.
